| International Latin:
International Latin is composed of five dances - the Cha Cha,
Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive - that are danced by partners both competitively
and socially. Cha Cha, Rumba and Samba originate from Latin
America while the Paso Doble came from Europe and the Jive came from
North America. In keeping with the origination of these dances,
the term "Latin American" is an abbreviation of "Latin
and American" and not a reference to the region of Latin
America. Dance scholars have universalized the international
dances by defining, naming and notating the steps of the dances,
categorizing them into levels, and creating standards for tempo and
rhythm. |
